Hot on the heels of Google’s Mobilegeddon, Microsoft announced on 14 May 2015 that its Bing search engine would be reconfigured to give more prominence to “mobile-friendly” websites, an acknowledgment of the growing importance of smartphones and other mobile devices.
This update might not be as severe as Google’s, Microsoft has stated that mobile friendliness would be just one of the factors considered when displaying search results.
Microsoft’s Shyam Jayasankar has stated the following in relation to this update and its effects for website owners in his blog:
– This means that for mobile searches on Bing, you can always expect to see the most relevant results for a search query ranked higher, even if some of them are not mobile-friendly.
– Pages that are highly relevant to a search will not get penalized even as mobile-friendly pages get a boost.
So at-least at the beginning this update will not necessarily mean existing sites gets penalized or hidden, but it does mean that Mobile-Friendly websites will have a distinct advantage.
And taken into consideration that currently more than half of internet searches worldwide are estimated to be made on mobile phones its important to be ready to meet your customers demand for easy access to your website content no mater which device they might be using to view it.
