How to accept credit card payments in your web shop?
For shop with a monthly turnover over 1000 USD , the choice should be quite easy….Get your own merchant account and a good payment gateway provider.
For US shops:
Merchant accounts are available both from local banks and from various internet merchant services.
For the gateway Authorize.net, Linkpoint and PayPal Pro?Payflow are all valid alternatives.
For UK shops:
Merchant accounts are mainly available from local business banks.
For the gateway Protx, Epdq (Barclays), PayPal Pro/Payflow and HSBC e-Secure are all valid alternatives.
For Shops reciding outside the US and UK , The offerings of payment gateways and merchant account providers are more slim, but its there….
The main advice is check with your business bank and they can usually point you in the right direction.
But there are also some companies who can provide merchant accounts and payment gateways to a variety of countries, like Cyberbit, Paypoint and Chronopay.
For shops with a monthly turnover under 1000 USD , it is usually more costeffective to use a 3 party payment provider service ( 3pp ).
For some countries, and some merchandise where its difficult to get a merchant account a 3pp might also be the only solution.
3pp companies which is good is not to easy to find, but these 3 are a fairly safe bet Worldpay, Paypal and 2checkout.
If you are planning to have a high turnover and still want to use a 3pp , Worldpay is the one to go for. (Owned by the Bank of Scotland Banking Group)
There are a wide selection of other 3pp services, but be carefull and check them out closly before choosing one, do a google search about them and check relevant forums for feedback regarding their services. A lot of merchants has lost money from choosing the wrong 3pp…..
